There are many great charities out there, and one near and dear to my heart is the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (www.cff.org). My friend also has a foundation that is near and dear to his heart, the Maeve McNicholas Memorial Foundation (www.maevesfoundation.org).
I received an e-mail last week that I should stop kissing the politicians’ butts and start writing about Christmas gifts.
Among the sites where I shop are: buy.com, zipzoom fly.com, windandweather.com, bestbuy.com, staples.com, oldnavy.com, cdw.com, target.com, shopzilla.com, ihome.com and apple.com.
Last week, we talked about the Cook County treasurer’s and Cook County assessor’s office Web sites. This week, I thought we could round out some of the other county offices. One of my top picks is the Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart’s Web site. I do a bit of work for the sheriff’s office, but had nothing to do with the Web sites for the office. www.cook countysheriff.org is a great place to get law enforcement information. In addition to hosting information about which inmates are incarcerated, you can find information about Cell Phones for Seniors. This program provides cell phones to senior citizens for emergency 911 calls.

Presidential politics is really heating up. So is the use of the internet for everything from voter contact (check out www.moveon.org) to fundraising (pick a candidates website and you can give) to advertising (see secondlife.com, facebook.com, and myspace.com). There are also sites to track the fundraising efforts of all federal candidates. I have written about www.opensecrets.org in the past, but there are others. You can even watch the debates on youtube.com. But, today I wanted to write about how you can use the computer to see who is most in line with your beliefs on many important issues.

I had plans to write about my experiences with the iPhone, but I changed my mind. Not because I am not having a blast with it, but because I don’t know it well enough yet. I have had it a little while, but I haven’t “converted” over to it yet. I am traveling this week and will have some time to play with it. I am going to try and write next week’s column entirely on the iPhone.

Typically, my only involvement with this column is limited to being the person behind the e-mail address at the end of each week’s offering. However, today I am stepping into another role, that of guest columnist while Jim is away.

We are a traveling society. One of the things that brings us special satisfaction is our ability to travel.
Parents unite! We can make a difference in our kids lives. There is a new survey out that shows if we take a stand, we will have an impact on our kids. The two studies are from the Business Software Alliance (www.bsa.org).
This week I am going to delve into some new things coming out of Amazon.com. It is hard to believe, but Amazon has been around for 13 years and went public in May 1997. I have purchased many books on Amazon, and it looks like other offerings are coming down the pike.
This week, I want to delve into the wonderful world of library Web sites.
